Kauai Search and Rescue (KSAR) is a non-profit, volunteer organization that provides its services at no cost to the people of Kauai and Hawaii. All members of our organization, dogs, dog handlers and support personnel (ground pounders) undergo extensive training. We train to standards established by the National Association for Search and Rescue (NASAR). People are trained in visual tracking, compass, topographical map reading, helicopter procedures, first aid and CPR. The dogs are obedience trained, and are trained to track based on either human scent discrimination or air scenting. Optionally, dog teams may be trained for urban disaster search and human remains detection. KSAR responds to call outs by both the Kauai Police Department and Kauai Fire Department. Once officially activated we work closely under their direction.
Our Mission Statement
KSAR is a non-profit, volunteer organization committed to providing prompt response with specialized canines, trained personnel, and equipment to assist Local, State, and Federal agencies in locating missing persons in a time of emergency. We will conduct ourselves in a professional manner educating and setting a good example to our community. We shall cooperate fully with agencies and entities requesting our expertise and service. We will work in concert with them towards our common goal. Our motto, "...that others may live", is our primary objective.
